Many seek answers to achieve such inner composure, unaware that over a thousand years ago, Chan Master Congshan provided us with an answer: “Go drink .”

One's physical state influences their psychological state. A healthy body fosters optimism and a calm demeanor in the face of challenges.

Tea is a natural beverage that provides nutritional value and . It contains various vitamins essential for human needs, contributing to dietary balance. The caffeine and catechins in tea help relax the digestive tract, aiding digestion. Caffeine also stimulates the central nervous system, providing a refreshing effect. The catechins in tea help lower total cholesterol, free cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides, promoting lipid metabolism.

Laozi said, “Stillness overcomes restlessness; cold overcomes heat. Tranquility is the true nature of all under heaven!”

In stillness lies composure.

In today's fast-paced society, the pursuit of goals can sometimes lead to restlessness and impatience. Restlessness often stems from dissatisfaction with one's current situation, an unrelenting desire for success, or the inability to act despite such desires. This internal agitation can disrupt daily rhythms and rob one of peace of mind.

Many seek ways to center themselves and find serenity, and is an excellent choice. First, the methodical process of washing cups, warming them, adding tea leaves, pouring water, appreciating the infusion, and sipping the tea gradually calms the mind. Often, restlessness arises from having much to do but failing to start any task, while tea offers a clear focus and encourages tranquility.

Second, the aroma of tea evokes the scent of nature, refreshing the mind and offering clarity. In this moment, one realizes what truly matters.

Most importantly, it is the taste of tea that brings everything together. As the tea soup flows across the tongue, one feels rejuvenated. Savoring each sip, counting the moments, worries gradually fade away.

No trials, no transformation into tea

“As the heart is, so is the appearance,” a person's character is ultimately determined by their inner world. True composure points towards a strong inner self. Many people with strong inner fortitude enjoy drinking tea, not by chance.

From a simple leaf to a true tea, the journey involves numerous trials: picking, fixation, rolling, and drying. Through these trials, the tea is reborn.

Lü Xun was fond of tea and would often write while sipping it. He once said, “To have good tea and know how to appreciate it is a blessing; first, one must cultivate skill, and second, develop a unique sense.” His love for tea extended beyond mere consumption to the art of appreciation. Despite living in tumultuous times, he remained composed and serene.

Furthermore, he wrote an essay titled “Drinking Tea,” where he shared his views on tea. In it, he confessed his preference for over black tea, explaining, “What I call drinking tea is drinking clear tea, appreciating its color, fragrance, and taste. My intention isn't merely to quench thirst, let alone satisfy hunger.” His emphasis on the essence of tea and his preference for the clarity of green tea reflects his own clear and tranquil inner world.

Lǎo Shě, in his play “Teahouse,” used tea as a metaphor for his perspective on society at the time. Lǎo Shě indeed loved tea and often remarked, “Drinking tea itself is an art.” Accompanied by clear tea, he wrote tirelessly, producing many renowned works. One wonders if the pages of his manuscripts carry the scent of tea.

Some might ask, does drinking tea guarantee composure for everyone?

Of course not. Tea simply provides an opportunity for composure through its unique qualities. Those who overlook this opportunity will remain unchanged.
